Quick how-to guide
So how do I use my iron?
Time, temperature and pressure are all important factors when applying IYK Vinyl, follow these steps for the perfect results.
Please be aware that once you have applied heat to the vinyl it is permanently attached to your garment. So make sure you are confident if in doubt purchase one of our practice kits found here, it includes everything you need to practice applying vinyl.
The Quick Guide:
- Prepare your work surface, you will press down hard with your iron, so a sturdy surface is a must - the floor or a worktop is fine. Place a towel or something similar down to protect your work surface from excess heat. (We don’t recommend an ironing board nor any surface that will suck the heat from your iron and be aware you're using high temperatures, so don't use something that will melt easily)
- Pre-heat your iron, you want about 140° so check your manufacturer’s guide and make sure the steam function is OFF. (A cotton setting should be about right)
- Lay down your garment and pre-press/iron the desired area to remove wrinkles and moisture.
- Place the IYK Transfer in the desired location, make sure the vinyl side is in contact with your garment and the shiny side is ‘up’.
- Lay the provided cover sheet over the transfer and make sure you’re happy with the positioning.
- PRESS DOWN HARD with the iron for approx. 20 seconds. Two hands will be needed, don’t move the iron around, if you are applying a large decal, apply the heat in stages.
- Remove the cover sheet and let the everything cool for a couple of seconds.
- Peel away the carrier plastic - you're done! (If the vinyl starts to peel away with the carrier plastic, or doesn't look like its stick down properly, you either need to up your temperature or pressure, or both and repeat)
